Video Services over VPN:

A VoIP VPN combines voice over IP and virtual private network technologies to offer a method for delivering secure voice. Because VoIP transmits digitized voice as a stream of data, the VoIP VPN solution accomplishes voice encryption quite simply, applying standard data-encryption mechanisms inherently available in the collection of protocols used to implement a VPN.

The VoIP gateway-router first converts the analog voice signal to digital form, encapsulates the digitized voice within IP packets, then encrypts the digitized voice using IPSec, and finally routes the encrypted voice packets securely through a VPN tunnel. At the remote site, another VoIP router decodes the voice and converts the digital voice to an analog signal for delivery to the phone.

A VoIP VPN can also run within an IP in IP tunnel or using SSL-based Open VPN. There is no encryption in former case, but traffic overhead is significantly lower in comparison with IPSec tunnel. The advantage of Open VPN tunneling is that it can run on a dynamic IP and may provide up to 512 bits SSL encryption.

VPN Well, if Voice over IP (VoIP) is on your radar, a VPN is a perfect solution to the often overlooked security vulnerabilities associated with this form of communication. Running VoIP traffic over VPNs is nothing new, but something that's certainly becoming more popular given the proliferation of VoIP in today's enterprises.

While everyone knows that credit card numbers sent in clear text can be vulnerable, at the same time everyone seems to think that the same data spoken over a VoIP is secure. Unfortunately, it's just as susceptible to the various network-based attacks that we're familiar with on our data networks. Whether you're using VoIP for interoffice communications or telecommuter connectivity, a VPN can encrypt voice traffic and eliminate the vulnerability of someone using a network analyzer to capture the data and replay it. You can also use a VPN to authenticate remote sites to make sure that communications via the VoIP network are coming from trusted sources.

So, is there any special type of VPN that must be setup to do this? Not really - you can just use a standard IPSec or similar VPN. These are pretty simple to setup for site-to-site configurations for securing VoIP connections that traverse the Internet. In addition, once you get around the typical client compatibility problems, client-to-site connectivity is possible as well which can help secure remote soft phones. Keep in mind, though, that if the VPN only protects communications from gateway to gateway and not handset to handset, there's always a chance that the VoIP traffic can be intercepted, modified, etc. once it's on the LAN.

Video Services over MPLS:

Today, service providers must distribute large volumes of video across backbone networks to an increasing number of distribution sites (often referred to as video hub offices or video serving offices) and subscribers. New deployments rely on IP routing to offer a wide variety of services across a common backbone, including VPNs, voice, Internet access, and video services. As service providers integrate IP-based video, ATM and SONET/SDH become inefficient for delivering this traffic to a wide number of endpoints. ATM and SONET/SDH were not designed to support IP multicast, which is the underlying technology used to deliver broadcast television channels. They also preclude the network from supporting a larger set of other services as part of a multiply offering.

Modern routing platforms scale to handle the large volume of video traffic to be delivered to various endpoints across the network, along with data flows from other service offerings. Key drawbacks to native IP forwarding are the lack of path control and deterministic resiliency. This has led to the rapid adoption of MPLS, which provides traffic engineering and rapid failure recovery across IP routing devices on par with SONET/SDH.

Although IP/MPLS traffic engineering and instant failover capabilities meet the requirements for video distribution, the lack of replication capabilities with LSPs has hindered the use of IP/MPLS for video transport. Without replication, MPLS LSPs cannot use network resources efficiently. The Juniper Networks point-to-multipoint LSP solution retains the traffic engineering and availability benefits of MPLS while providing replication without the overhead of multicast routing. Juniper Networks delivers this solution as part of a larger suite of technologies to handle video transport across the backbone. The Juniper Networks point-to-multipoint solution efficiently replicates IPTV and other broadcast video traffic from one main content distributor to multiple local studios or head-ends. point-to-multipoint LSPs are supported on all Juniper Networks T-series and M-series routers, including the new T1600 routing node.
